I just put my boat in the water for the first time this weekend. When I put it in foward, and some thottle, it pops out of foward. I removed the L/U and noticed there may have to be 2 backing spacers and tab, that go on the back side of the F/R gears, Mine only had one. I reassembled it and adjusted shift rod to get max engagement in foward. Neut-rev,no problems. I did notice the catches on the inside of foward gearand shift fingers were somwhat worn. Would someone please post a print for stack up of L/U

Re: 68 33hp ski twin popping out of foward

I had a similar problem on a 1960 75hp.
The dog gear was worn as well - see attached photo -

This must be replaced if there is wear on the edges of the shifting gears. You'd be surprised how little wear will allow your boat to pop out of forward.

This is often caused by the helmsman not shifting correctly, not to imply it was you, likely the previous owner, as was the case for my boat.

The shift into forward needs to be done with some authority, not smoothly and slowly as one might think.

Hope this helps, although it's not great news.

good luck,
Bill

Thanks Bill
I brought the pcs to work and Tig welded new shoulders on the dog gear, and on the shifter fork thing. Hopefully it'll work for a awhile....lol

Anyone have a schematic of prop shaft stack-up of lower unit 68 ski twin, 33hp?
