Nothing but bolt problems. Argh! Replacing impeller on new to me 9.5 '68 Evinrude. Removing lower unit discover one bolt already sheared off, twisted another one off same side and then twisted one off in the water pump. All are flush or lower but was able to get top of pump off. And this was all after several days each being soaked in PB. Both seemed to be and were moving then snap.......

So several questions some related some not.

1. I am planning on left hand drill and chase the threads. Seems to be the best route from searching here. Any other ideas? All these threaded holes are blind.

2. How hard is it to remove the exhaust housing to put in a drill press? I am pretty good drilling straight with hand drill, but not done stainless and alum together before. Is it worth dis-assembly?

3. Does the screw in the lower water pump housing (which is threaded) screw into the Lower unit? I assume it does.

4. What comes in the water pump repair kit #382296 ? Need Serria number.

5. It feels like the drive shaft can be withdrawn up and out. Is that ok to do without messing anything up like the oil retainer? Would like to remove more room for drill.

6. While taking the flywheel off the magneto plate moved around quite a bit. How should that be positioned "set" for setting points and running operation?

7. Does anyone know what size and type the spring, nut and bearing are for the friction screw? I would like to get parts at hardware store.

8. Need carb kit #3802048 Anyone know Serria number or where to get?

Good news is painted the hood last night looking sweet.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: '68 9.5 Evin problems and lots of questions

The 9.5 has a cork float. The float needs to be replaced whenever servicing the carburetor. It only comes in the OEM kit.

The shellac coating on the floats is dissolved by alcohol in the gasoline and alcohol in additives like SeaFoam.

The aftermarket waterpump kit is a few dollars cheaper, but does not have the impeller housing included in the OEM kit.

Re: '68 9.5 Evin problems and lots of questions

I ordered an OMC repair kit for my 9.5 just this winter and it came with a brand new cork float. I was a little surprised they haven't changed it out to a newer composite material. Some of the other model kits I've bought did have an upgraded float material. Rick.
