1968 sportwin, 9.5 Okay,,,,I have been replacing ignition parts, gas lines, and installed kit in carb. Finally complete,,,,or so I thought.

Took this motor out last wknd, ran like a top for 10 to 15 minutes. Then would only run with choke on. Did find old fuel line garbage in the bowl of the carb. I have taken the carb apart, seriously 12 to 14 times since, and cannot get the low idle side of things to work. Most of the time it works great with the throttle half to full, bowl is clean as a pin.

I have tried cleaning everything with carb cleaner, and have it soaking now. The low idle holes in the throat do spray out some when I blow the cleaner in the hole underneath. I am just not sure what else to do. I even stuck a needle in these holes as far as I could.

What else can you do? The motor sounds great when I have the choke on. The low idle knob does nothing at this point. If I spray gas over the barrel it works good as well. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Desperate

Sounds like you have a restriction in the low speed circut of the carb. Is the tip of the low speed needle broken off? When you overhauled the carb, did you remove the core plugs and clean the passages underneith?

Okay, good questions. I did check the the tip of the needle and it looks great. The core plgs came out and I cleaned what I could. The larger one(bottom) has the plastic plug behind it,,,,,I couldn't get to the orfices? Should the plastic piece come out once the plug has been removed? If so how does it come out? Thanks

I don't see anything in the manual about that plastic plug behind the core plug cap.

There is a filler plug under the lower core plug. It should be able to be pried out with a small screwdriver

I actually have 2 of these carbs, I have tried removing that plastic filler plug and it cracked and has only patially came out in pieces. There was not a replacement in the rebuild kit, so I left it alone in the second carb. I thought I had ruined it.
