Hi all, Does anyone know how to dissasemble the prestolite gjg4008m generators that were fitted to the 40hp evinrudes? Mine were siezed when I got them, and after soaking in CRC an now spinning. I want to open them up though and do a proper check on the internals before puting them into use. The end caps are loose, but don't want to come all the way off. Any idea's?

Hi lark.
If you've got the thru-bolts out, the only other thing you need to loosen are the two electrical connection studs. Remove the nuts from them, and then pry up the two white insulators around the studs until they're free.
The connection studs are attached to sides of the frame, and are preventing the end-cap from coming off.

Hope this helps!

Seloc volume one(1956-1972 2 cylinder up to 40 horse) has a very precise description of everything having to do with these generators.

Re: 68 evinrude 40hp generator

Pauls answer was the info I needed, Thanks Paul. As for manuals, I have the original Evinrude 40hp manual coming in the mail, got it off ebay for au$37 instead of the au$90 to $100 that the seloc manual sells for here in australia. beside the seloc is too generic (to many models covered in book) for my likeing. Thanks for the info all the same rolmops,
