I have a an old 55hp Evinrude that I rebuilt (with much help from folks on this board). I've been running it all summer with a few minor hiccups. One was a sticking advanced timing rod. Unfortunately, I messed with carbs before figuring it out. After pulling the flywheel, cleaning up the points and fixing the advanced timing, it starts on muffs with a touch of the key. Cold/warm doesn't matter. But when I get in the water it's a bit more trouble. It starts initially with the choke. But then gives me hell ever after. Have to crank it a dozen times to get it to start. Smokes a bit for minute then runs great.
I've dug through these posts and read about adding a diode between power and starter. I do have a new power pack and coil. Could this be it or is carb adjustment more likely? Also, I've always run the mix a bit heavy on oil. First to break it in and then just overly cautious. Closer to 40/1 vs 50/1. Fouling plugs? Bet that's it, sitting here writing this got some old synopses firing....
