i took my 1968 100hp rude to a wrench to get fixed. it has no spark at number 1-2-4 plenty of spark at number 3 it has a new power pack and the carb was just rebuilt along with a new rectifier and starter. what should i look for as a price? just want to make sure that they are not going to try to rip me off. when i took it to them they said that the labor was $55.00 an hour plus parts does this sound fare?

Assuming that the wrench is competent and honest, $55/hr is a very good rate, Buckeye.

This time of year rates as high as $85 are not unusual.

hey all, just got word from the repair shop along with the price to repair this motor. new rectifier, disributor cap, rotor, wire harness, plug wires, total cost $800.00. but will sell me the parts to do this for $245.00. think that i will take him up on the 245.00 and hope this cures the problem.

are you sure that you need all that stuff?if you have a manuel(not clymer!) you can trouble shoot most problems fairly easy also this site has some great people on it who can walk you thru most problems...have a 1969 115 johnny and this site helps keep the old girl purring!!!!!!!

Re: 68 evinrude starts but idle's bad and misfires

i have been working with joe revees and i think that we both are stumped on this one. the boat ran fine untill the powerpack went out. so i ordered new pack from joe put the thing on and the motor starts for about 3-5 seconds and then it backfires and dies. checked for spark and found that only #3 was getting spark. already replaced rectifier and rebuilt carb before it went to the shop and there saying it's bad again and the boat has not ran since it was put on and the funny thing is i bought the recifier from the same shop that the boat is at now. and i think i'm still getting taken on the price for the parts

Hey buckeye700179, where are you having the work done at. I am having trouble with an old 58' 50 horse. I live in Dayton right now cause of the Air Force and the cheapest wrench I found around here is $75 an hour. Would gladly drive back to Columbus if this guy is as good as you say and is cheaper.

Re: 68 evinrude starts but idle's bad and misfires

I think that stumped would not be the best terminology to use. However, there's only so much one can do via e-mail. Shame that Buckeye doesn't live close to me as that engine really isn't that tough to diagnose.

Buckeye.... On the starboard side of the engine, there is a vacuum type switch which has a rubber diaphram over it. The inside of that diaphram has a metal contact. Check to make sure that the diaphram does not have a hole or a crack which would disable it.

Thanks buckeye, great to here that they are located in dayton. Sorry, for some reason I was thinking that centerville was in columbus. I got it confused with circleville.

buckeye700179 Have you tried plug wires? Those old v 4s are (were) one of the few OMC's that seemed to need them changed. Also thinking......Does this engine have two points? They have to be very clean, and I recall gapped at .010.
Good Luck, DHP

no points just a sensor and it's set at .028. i have good spark from the coil the distributor cap and good spark at number 3 no spark at 1 2 4. new powerpack, wire harness, rebilt carb, new rectifier, new distributor cap rotor and trigger wheel and ignition switch. i just don't know what to do or check next? i also took the number three spark plug wire and switched it with one that had no spark and sill got the same results.
