68 Fastwin bogged down

my 68 Fastwin 18 will bog down any time i try to advance throttle. at first it was towards the end of a days run with low fuel so i have cleaned all fuel components from tank through pump and rebuilt carb with new float. Towards the end of the season it just would bog anytime throttle advanced. Engine starts fine and idles smooth (always has) but bogs down when throttle advanced. i read that the old original coils could cause probs so i pulled flywheel checked for old coils / All electrics looks like brand new. could it be reed valves? Really stumped here.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

HI alumachris. I'm inclined to think you may be dropping a coil too, assuming the carb cleaning was successful. These old gems can start and run surprisingly well on only one cylinder. You may just have a frayed wire that's grounding out. It's not that uncommon. Have you confirmed consistent, strong spark from each cylinder? The spark should be able to jump a 1/4" gap with a bright blue, snapping spark. You should be able to get an adjustable gap spark plug tester from most auto parts stores for about $5. Here are some handy links that can walk you through and ignition rebuild and carb set up.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

Thanks kfa4303, i can't wait to get back out in the barn and get to work on it. by the way: i made a nasty chip on the flywheel taking it off but i do have a spare from a 66 model. i'm hoping that it will work, looks good to me. what do you think?
Thanks again!

Alumachris, I am curious, how did you make the chip on the flywheel, what type of puller are you using? Should be using one that uses the three bolts holes around the crankshaft, if you are using one that pulls from the outside edges you are going to ruin your flywheel.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

Sounds like you have an air leak, causing a lean bogg. When its running advance the throttle and take some wd-40 with the red nozzle attached and spray around the crankcase halfs, intake manifold gasket area, carb mounting area and if picks up you found your leak. If everything checks ok try closing the choke when it boggs, if it picks up - fuel delivery issue. Also could be crank seal thats gone bad.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

bbstacker1, to answer your question, how did i chip / crack the fw: I DID IT. i made a stupid mistake and didn't pay close enough attention. Note to others : watch and listen carefully as you tighten center puller bolt (especially with air wrench). chip happened right at 1 of the 3 pulling bolts. Could probably re-use the FW but have a spare. Thanks for making me give the confession..
More importantly; Thank you very much for your service to our country! i know what a bbstacker is. i'm retired X F-16 guy.

Thanks ultra353, as soon as i get it back together i will try that. btw this thing bogs immediately as i advance. would that fit this diagnosis? again, Thank you very much for an easy (& cheap)trouble shoot procedure. i will use it alot.

"i'm retired X F-16 guy." That just sounds cool :) What is a bbstacker anyway? (bb=big bomb?) Here's another more gentle way to get the flywheel off next time. cheers.

Alumachris, back at ya bud for your service, my first years (78-80) were at Myrtle Beach AFB. Kfa, a bbstacker is a Munitions Maintenance Specialist or better known as just Munitions or AMMO, we worked in the Munitions Storage Area, aka bomb dump.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

I believe they are but I can't speak, for sure, for the Navy. In the Air Force, MMS (Munitions Maintenance Squadron) used to be identifed by red hats but that changed over the years (different color hats and Squadron names), I got out in 1992, so I am out of the loop as to how things are today.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

Thanks again, bbstacker. it's a shame that MBAFB got closed down. We flew along side those guys alot while practicing close air support missions. What a great group!
i retired in '96.
miss it everyday.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

Thanks again kfa4303, the photo looks like the same puller i used however, i was using a 1/2 inch air wrench with a little too much gusto. for others reading: remember to be patient.. like they say in other threads, it will come off.
Ref: "i'm retired X F-16 guy." That just sounds cool" Yes, the most fun i ever had with my clothes on. And those bbstackers were some of the best ever. we leaned on those guys hard and they always came through. They're smart and tough. no slackers in that group.

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

ok, here's an update: coils and wires = checked good. replaced points and condensers. re-assembled and confirmed good spark on both cylinders. Now going through fuel system. so far everything looks clean and serviceable. i did make the mistake of taking the fuel pump apart to inspect / clean. Wont do that again! What a puzzle. hope i got it back together properly. will find out this weekend. going to crank her up for more troubleshooting. or if she's good: back in the water!:p
btw: this motor spends 90% of the time in salt water. does that factor into these problems ya think?
Thanks again to all!

Re: 68 Fastwin bogged down

Alumachris, glad to hear she is running good. Don't know much about salt water PM, I guess if it were me I'd flush it every chance I got and make sure to keep things lubed.
