68' Johnson 20hp (FD 22M)..Want to add starter..

Hi folks, I want to add a starter to my 68' 20hp johnson(FD 22M). It has the starter ring on the top already, but I cant find out what else I need. I have looked at both the BRP and boat.net parts diagrams and dont see the starter set up on either Can somebody let me know what I need?...Thanks, Roy

Short list; Starter, starter solenoid, wires, switch/button, battery, battery cables. Might take some searching to find a starter and solenoid.

Thanks for the list. Do you know the part#'s or years of the starter and solenoid that will work on the motor? I have access to alot of old parts and need to know what to get.

Sorry, can't help with part #'s and you are correct in that it looks like BRP can't either. Not sure if the 25hp used the same starter.

I recently went through the same thing when trying to add electric start to my 63 18HP. I wasn't concerned with finding a part number but I wanted to find a pic of someone that had the electric start set-up so I could see what I was looking for.

Made a post on here asking for a pic and had several replies.

I think it may be the same bracket you guys need but not positive. I believe the solenoids are almost all interchangeable. I think your best bet is to start a new post, ask for a pic of what you need and at least you will know what you are looking for.


Turns out I found a parts motor..25hp, can't even remember what year, on my local Craigslist. Since I now knew exactly what I needed, I went to look at it and it was the right bracket and solenoid. He wanted $150 for the motor but I talked him into selling me just the starter and solenoid and brackets for $50.

Took the brackets I had off, bolted on the new ones with the starter and solenoid and now just need to wire a switch too it.

My neighbor did practially the same thing except he did not even use the solinoid; just got a 60 amp switch button from Auto zone and wired straight from battery to the starter, button cost him about $10.00 bucks. Works for his just fine. Basically the same setup as on the 15HP Evinrude.

And if you will be using the engine remotely you will need the choke solenoid and wiring.
