Hi folks, Im trying to get my 68' johnson(FD 22M) running. The motor runs great w.o.t. Im having problems with the low speed(trolling). When I adjust the low speed setting , it doesnt change anything. I can screw it all the way down and it still doesnt change. I have cleaned the carb. What would cause this??

Maybe you think you cleaned the carb.

You must dissamble he carb, soak overnight in carb cleaner and rebuild with a new carb kit, including the float. Rinse everything off with water and blow out all passages with compressed air. I had one carb that needed this treatment 3 times before it would run right, but that was on a 1972 20HP.

Follow the manual as far as reassembly and initial adjustment, and then do a link-n-sync.

I just took it apart and when the needle is closed, I can spray carb cleaner into the passage and it comes out around the needle. Should it do this??

Comes out around the needle?? Have you got the packings in there and the packing nut snugged down?

Look at the end of the needle. Is it pointy sharp? If it has a flat end, it probably is broken off in the seat. Not a good situation.

Packing is good now. I noticed that when I open the throttle all the way, the butterfly is good. The problem is when I turn the throttle back down the butterfly doesnt go back down more than a little bit. Should it go all the way shut when I turn the handle all the way to stop? If I mess with the little linkage it moves...Roy

Is the return spring missing on the roller which rides on the cam (on the front of the armature plate)?

I feel like a fool. If you put them back together the correct way they work how they are supposed to. I didnt have the spring that goes on the butterfly shaft even on the carb. I found it on my bench behind the old float. Its working great now.:D..Thanks for all the help folks, Roy
