Hi all, steady progress on the rebuild. Couple questions:
1) thermostat - 143 or 160 degree? I tested the thermostat in the unit (pot of water) no action at boiling temp so need to replace. I have read the 160 degree might be better than the 143. Thoughts? If a 160 is better anyone know a part number for one that is the same size/fit?
2) There was no thermo switch (the one to the choke solenoid) What are your thoughts on replacing or not? I have read the thermo switch can cause performance issues when it chokes unessisarily. Thoughts?

Thanks for your informed opinions and help.

Thermal switch can be eliminated by connecting both choke solenoid wires to the red&white wire coming from the remote choke switch. The choke is then totally under the driver's control.

Not sure what the 'stat specs were that year.

Thanks F_R. I like that plan. I'll dig into the thermostat question some more. Another thread I read mentioned running a 160 degree helps with atomizing the fuel for cleaner and more efficient combustion, due to the higher operating temp. Anyone else hear anything similar? I would think if that were true newer motors would have 160's but being new to boats I have no idea.
Thanks.

Well sure, that theory is common to all engines, not just outboards. That's why cars run at around 190 degrees. Now the rest of the story: In my own personal opinion, that little bit of difference in temp won't amount to a hill of beans in performance of your outboard. Put the correct thermostat in it. P.S., I'm not an engineer.
