Hi, I was just trying to see if I could get some advice on what may be wrong with my johnson. After sitting for about 6 months now it has gained some new problems. When you accelerate in either forward or reverse too fast it free spins, or acts like it does anyway. If you very very slowly come up to speed it usually doesn't do it. Then if I do get it up to speed it will usually bog down right away. Then I broke the pull starter this morning, but I know how to fix that. Any help would be great.

sounds like you have a couple of problems here. first, the prop may be "spun", meaning it has broken the bond between the prop and the hub. You can check that by making a mark on the hub that aligns with a mark on the prop and take it for a ride. When you come back in, the two marks should still be aligned, if not = spun prop. Second, sounds like the high speed jet may be plugged in the carb. A good cleaning and re-build kit will fix that. You also may check the fuel tank vent and see that it's venting correctly and all fuel line connections.

true, you prop has a hub that could spin. but usually the shear pin will go first, if you hit something.

does it ever feel like you hit something. a good bump, or thump?

I will have to check and see if the prop has spun any or if the shear pin has sheared. I have hit the prop in a sunken log or two, but never at high speeds. But the motor does seem to clunk like you hit something for no reason some times. So it looks like I got to take the prop off, get a carb kit and also buy a new pull started. Thanks for the help. If you can think of anything else let me know.
