Re: 68 merc. 65 hp running slow

Welcome to iboats. Have someone (besides the helmsman) to check that the throttle butterfly vanes are fully opening at WOT. If not, adjust the throttle.
At full throttle, did the motor sound like it was runnning full throttle or close to it? In other words, did it sound like it should have been going faster?
If so, the hub has spun-out in the prop. Remove it, and take it to a prop shop for re-hubbing.
Does it idle ok?

I would also add.

you can check the buterfly yoruself wile the motor is off. You might have to shut it off in gear to be abble to advance the throttle 100%. its not recomended to shift into gear wile not running. from gear to neutral is fine wile not running.

You did not mention what type of Boat this is, How big, how heavy, whats it made of. All of those things make a difference. Some make a REAL big difference.

you said you were new to boating. If the already suggested things arent the fault, some other things might also be:

was the bow high in the air? if so this could be cause, move weight forward or use trim tabs, prefurable weight forward, trim tabs cost speed when used, moving weight dosent.

how does your prop look? any defomrity will slow you some like nicks and snall chips. Magor deformities will kill your speed, like if it was run on some rocks and got bent.

how many people, and or how much stuff was in the boat? Too much weight on board will cause the boat too sit below its effective draft. this will make extra friction and slow you down allot. Typicaly the nose will be too low, and you will plow through the water

The last thing I can think of would be actual motor possition,, How deep in the water and at what angle the motor is.
Usualy, the cavitation plate should be no more then 1 inch below the bottom of the keel. the motor should also , Usualy be straight up and down., if the motor is at the wrong angle, it will loose thrust, and usualy throw up a rooster tail behind you under power. or push the nose down into the water if the angle is wrong the other way. ( in ) If it is too low, the drag off the leg being so deep and the leverage disadvantage will get ya.

How were you mesuring your speed? speed is very deciving on the water.

Strictly speaking,, a 60 should move most boats under 20 feet pretty good. Provided it isnt over laiden. But speed is a giant equation of hull shape, weight, design. then you start adding up motor weight, gas weight at 8 pounds a galon, a few people 150 ta 200 or so, coolers, skis, junk, stuff, more stuff,, its all relivant to speed, more so with small boats and motors. then factor the outboard angle thing and we havent even touched wind and wave condition hehehe.

Anyway, I hope you find your boats solution

good luck
