Has anyone converted or knows what it may take to change a push/pull steering on the older OMC Outdrives to a true coarse steering? Below is a picture of a 68 outdrive that has a small gear in the upper left (relation to the picture)corner of the upper gear case which I think indicates tru-coarse but has the steering rod bracket clearly showing.

I wouldn't waste the money personally on an WAY obsolete drive.

Hi Nutcase,

Appreciate your comment, didn't know that.

Can someone help with my question.

think you'd want to look for a donor boat with same gears in the upper to get the whole intermediate and upper gearcases..and you'll need the proper length steer cable
and a helm unit....
needs to be high profile for the correct upper too.
definitely a donor boat situation

that pic you posted is where someone replaced their upper with a later tru-course one
they just take the worm sector out of the box- the shaft stays to seal the hole

Guess I need to clarify something. I was considering a spare drive. The 68' has all the specs that my 73 has with the exception of the Tru-Coarse which my 73 has.

the one pictured should be fine as a spare, but it's not a 68.
That's a newer upper in a 68 lower.

a regular 1968 w/o trucourse would be of no use. They sort of look like you can just pop core plugs out and install the stuff, but there's machining not done inside the case (in my experience.)

That is exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks HS

Have a variety of OEM shop manuals to this outdrive in various model years. Is converting this to a Tru-Coarse rather straight forward like replacing the water pump assembly, which I have done or is it somewhat more involved like replacing and Upper Case drive gear which I have not done and would not attempt.

Thanks HS. Making more sense now. Wasn't seeing the Tru-Coarse option on the BRP site till you got to 1973. It would be kind of neat if everything for the Tru-Coarse is still intact inside the gear box. Maybe I will find out.
