I need some professional(or non-professional) opinions here. Which is a better overall motor: 1968 100hp electramatic or 1971 125hp hydro-electric. Any info on these motors would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Rocks

Hi Rocks
At this point it would be a matter of which motor was in the best condition. If both are about equal the I would probably go for the later model. The main reason for my choice is the ignt. system. Parts for the 68 ignit system are fairly expencive if you ask me. I own one. But I'd rather have a less expencive, good running, good shape 68, than a piece-o-junk no matter what year.

Thanks for the advice. Would it be harder to find parts for the '68? Where would be a good place to look for something like that?
Thanks again
Rocks

Im no expert but have heard both of those lower units can be problematic to repair and if not given proper care will need repair.I would stick with a standard lower unit.

Hi Rocks
Finding some parts for either one of these motors might get to be a challange. Although I think most stuff can be had for a price. There are alot of these motors around and quite a few in good shape mechanicly. The trouble is all the electrical stuff, wireing harnesses, switches, ampilfiers, electro magnets, etc are old. And as steelspike said, this afects shifting of the L/U. A guy could end up dumping more money into these motors than there worth. Of course this all depends on the price payed for the unit to start with and the condition. Unless you are a good scrounger, mechanic and really know your motors, you would probably do better spending a little more money and buying somthing a little newer. Possably from a reputable dealer. This is the reason there are so many of these type motors at seemingly reasonable prices. They drive me nuts, they,re too good to junk, but too expencive to fix.

Rocks I have a 1965 90 hp johnson electric, shift, it runs great. I am just repowering to a 1988 john 110 manual. The electric shift is a great engine, as with all of the older Johnsons. Stay with what you have until it will no longer run. Parts can still be bought.
