I need to remove the bearing carrier from a 68 55hp evinrude electric shift to replace the retainer plate the threads are bad and getting water in the LU from it.

Now my question is how the hell am i getting it out? Book says use a puller with arms through the web of the carrier. Well the web is only on the top half of the carrier so its not letting me pull straight. I don't wanna bend the prop shaft or anything. Has anyone delt with this carrier before?

Also for the snap rings do I need a special truarc pliers or will a long set of needle nose work the same?

Thanks, this is my first time getting in depth with a LU besides oil and water pump.

That carrier is a hard and dangerous job. I made a puller with a fat washer with three holes and pulled against the rim of the lower unit with three big bolts. I didn't want to break the shaft. You have to tighten smoothly one turn on a bolt, then the next and to trim it out. My carrier broke, but I got it out.

How the heck did the threads get bad?? Nevertheless, as the book says, use a J hook and a slide hammer and yank it out. You won't bend the prop shaft. But the carrier might not want to cooperate.

Those snap rings are a real bear and require a proper tool to remove. You sure as hang aren't going to remove them with needle nose pliers.

I have know idea how they got bad it was like that when I bought it. Must have been from some dumb @ss x-threading it cuz I have know idea how they got bad but every bolt I put in ruins the threads on the bolt so they must be bad.

Just thought there was a cheaper way of getting the snap rings out with out buying the special pliers. I don't even know where to get the pliers. I looked on home depot.com and lowes.com and didn't see them

home depot and lowes don't have that great of a selection of automotive tools. Go to sears or napa for a good set. autozone, advance autoparts, or harbor freight for a decent set (and cheap!)

Wow do I feel stupid I never even thought to look at auto parts store. And I was just at O'Reilys an hour or so ago.
