Hello everyone. My friend has a 1968 Evinrude sportwin 9.5. The motor has about 2 hours of use in the past 10 yrs, and unknown use before that. The engine still looks new and shiny under the hood.
Before we attempted to run it for the first time, checked compression 70psi, both cylinders, we changed the water pump impeller, changed lower unit oil, replaced spark plugs (J4C), replaced fuel lines, cleaned the carb- which looked brand new once we separated the 2 halves. cleaned the screen fuel filter, and added a clear inline fuel filter.
The motor ran great in the test barrel 3 times, but when we put the motor on the boat it ran great for about 10 min, but as soon as it was put in neutral, the engine started to miss and die out, it would not rev up at all. we tried pumping the ball a little, but that just seems to kill the motor instantly. pulled and replaced plugs again, and cleaned carb again- to no avail.
We pulled the flywheel last night to check the points. one set of points is mushroomed a little but both sets are pretty pitted up, both sets are at about .018 - i know it should be .020. we are going to replace the points, but do you think this could be a major factor in why its running like it is? im lookin for some trouble shooting help, as i dont want to just start replacing parts and hope i change the right one. thanks in advance.
