these units default to forward, and will only go to neutral/revese when the motor is running.

Re: 69/115hydroelec.

Other posters have stated that they have hooked a drill motor to the driveshaft and spun it to check function of LU. It doesn't take a lot of rpm as the starter motor spins it fast enough to function when starting the engine. Hope this helps.

I can get them to shift by turning the flywheel with a big ratchet (several complete revolutions), or certainly with the starter motor. Not sure this would work in all cases, but it has always worked for me (5 or 6 examples).

Omc sell's a socket that fit's the upper drive shaft splines. I have used this socket with a speed wrench to turn the drive shaft while the gearcase is in the bench holding fixture. Of course you have the battery connected for this test. If the gearcase is correct, it take's very little RPM to shift.

If fwd. gear is removed, all you have to do is pull the oil pump. It may be held in place with a tapered snap ring, similar to the ones in the rear of the gearcase. (don't get them mixed up). Them remove the oil screen and use 2 long threaded rods to rock and wiggle the pump housing out of the gearcase.
