69 25 hp Evinrude smokes, leaks fuel

My 69 sportster is leaking fuel, I replaced one of the two circulating lines that attached to the top of the block under the flywheel because I could see it was split. The other one looked fine but fuel is leaking and dripping out of the bottom of the engine cover. The fuel pump looks to be newer and all other lines look good. The motor runs strong but smokes at low speeds. The motor was given to me and had been sitting indoors for years. Could these problems be related? Where else can fuel be leaking from? Any advice about this motor appreciated, it runs strong and starts right up but too smokey and gassy!

Fuel could leak from the carb, especially if the motor was tilted up, i.e. horizontal position.
edit: Also, when you squeeze the bulb if the float isn't working properly.

I'm going to replace the other line but that may be my issue. Any thoughts on the blue smoke?

If you're running the proper mix, 50:1. I wouldn't worry about the smoke.
edit: Also, I hear the synthetic oil smoke less.

I have been mixing 2.6 oz per gallon. It only smokes after being run at low speeds for 15-20 min, run it fast smoke goes away and it will run slow w/ no smoke for a while after. Thanks for info.

You may want to service the carb if you haven't done so already or trying adjusting the slow speed idle knob to lean it out a little to cut down on the smoke.

If turning the low speed screw in a bit doesn't fix it I'd be doing a compression test. Lower compression engines (worn) tend to smoke at low rpms as the inefficient fuel burn is more pronouned at lower engine speeds.

I did run one like that (knowing the compression was "low") for several seasons before scrapping it though... still ran good enough for the Jon boat it was on until that last season... once it started giving starting problems I parted it out as overhauling it (parts cost alone) was more expensive than buying another used engine.

I have replaced the impeller and the motor pumps water well at all speeds, I have done nothing to the carb but my mechanic disconnected the rich lean knob and adjusted the carb by hand and then reattached the knob, now it is pinned on lean. Anyone have experience w/ adjusting rich lean knob by taking it off?
