It appears oil is leaking out of the shaft, I filled the lower unit and replaced the washers on the fill/drain screws. When I took off the prop there was oil on the shaft. Does this mean my shaft is no good or can I seal it somehow?

How was the original lower unit oil? If it had water in it or was milky in color, you probably have a leak. The oil you see on the prop shaft could be just unburned fuel. Why don't you remove the lower drain fill screw and see if water comes out. If you have only run the motor a little since the oil change, the color of the oil should be about the same as what went in. You can also do a vacuum and pressure test on the lower unit if you have the tool or want to spend $30 or more to buy one.

Re: 69 25 hp Evinrude water in gear oil

The lower unit came off of another motor and worked fine for 3 or 4 trips probably 6 hours total. Then it jumped out of gear and i checked the gear oil and it was milky. I drained and replaced the oil and it worked well for an hour and then jumped again when I checked it again it was milk. I cannot see oil leaking out anywhere but from the shaft so i am assuming this is where the leak is. I am wondering if I can seal the shaft or if it is warn out and needs to be replaced b/c it will no longer hold oil?

If it is indeed the propshaft seal, you can install the new one 'almost' in, and it won't be wearing on the propshaft 'groove' that may have been cut by the old seal. The jumping out of gear is very likely a worn clutch dog, and probably has nothing to do with the water intrusion..

If it is indeed the propshaft seal

THIS is a diagram of the gearcase assembly of the motor in question.

Which part are you calling the "propshaft seal" ?

Nothing so called in the Parts list!

All I know is I found what looked like and smelled like gear oil on the shaft when I removed the prop. I could not find any evidence of gear oil leaking anywhere else. I'm taking back to my mechanic to break it down and inspect gears and shaft and then rebuild. Keep you posted thanks for info everyone.

The gearcase head is the prop shaft seal. I have changed out the seals in one, but needed a dremmel tool to get it out. replaced seal and jb welded the washer in place. But I had the gear oil running out. No leaks.

The seals are designed to keep grease in, not water out. It's just the way it's designed. If you get the Sierra gearcase seal set, the seals that you need for the gearcase head should be in there.

As far as it jumping out of gear, you have a worn clutch dog. A temporary fis is to turn it around, then all you have to worry about is it jumping out of reverse instead of foreward.

These are good motors and easy to maintain, but age is getting to them and repair parts sometimes are more than the motor is worth, so one has to be creative and improvise.

I have 2 (one 20HP and a 25HP) and would get another with a frozen powerhead in a minute, ( I've got 2 spare powerheads looking for a home)

Thanks for the info , the lower unit worked well until it started leaking, it only hopped out of gear a handful of times I'm hoping the clutch dog is still good, are you sure it can be reversed?

Yes, it can be. f the gears are god, a new dog can bought from any OMC dealer, still in production.

Thanks, dropped it off last night, mechanic thinks it may be that the shaft has a groove in it and has a less warn one to replace it with.
