I have no personal experience with a prop surround but it seams if you were concerned you would need one then a little loss of performance would be better than damaging your prop or even worse the lower unit.

Mike, I think you already know but anything that can produce drag will reduce performance. If it was me I'd rather lose a little performance to save damage to my motor.
