I am a reborn boater, it has been over 20 years since owning a boat, and I have a 1969 Johnson 55HP. I don't know how to tell if the impellor is working or not. Can someone steer me in the right direction?

You have 2 ports on the back of the midsection that are exhaust ports. If the impeller is working properly you should be getting a pretty good spray of water out of these 2 ports. If in doubt pull the lower unit and replace the water pump. Another trick of the trade is to run the motor and touch the motor block if you can hold hand on there for a 2 count then the motor is probably cooling ok as long as water is coming out of the exhaust ports.

I pulled the lower unit today and checked the water pump and impeller, both seem to be good. The impeller was in great shape. I still don't have water coming the ports on the mid section. Could there be anything else that is the problem?

Could be that the water tube is plugged up. try to run a hose up there to see if you can get water to come out the ports.

Okay so I ran water up the tube and it started coming out of the other water tube. So does that mean that it was going though the cycle or does that mean it is clogged somewhere?

Check the screen on the lower unit to make sure that it is not plugged. Im not convinced your impeller is good. Evinrude impellers will not work if they are not 100 percent intact. If there is any rounding or rub marks or cracking this impeller is bad. The housing and cup could be bad as well. Your best bet is to rebuild the water pump then you should be good. Half the work is done already youve got the lower unit off. :)

Thanks so much for all your help.

I will order the new parts tonight and will rebuild it. I wish the lower unit was still off but it only takes me about 10 minutes to drop it. Does the water tubes connect or are they on different ends of the channel.

Do you know what the part numbers for everything is? The motor is 55ESL69C
