Hello every1! I'm having some problems correctly wiring the ignition at the dash. I have a manual and the wiring diagram for 1969 shows the 85hp with alternator but i'm not sure I have an alternator in my motor so I'm not sure if i wired it correctly. I removed the motor and all the wires including the ignition from one boat to be put on my other one. The problem is after my buddy removed the wires we cant find the paper we wrote the wiring diagram  . After hooking it up the way the manual diagram tells me to, it does nothing, so maybe someone can tell me the proper color scheme??

Anyhow i'm pretty sure its just the wrong wiring because it worked when i changed the selonoid a few months ago and havent ran it since so i dont think I need to replace that again. ANY comments will be MUCH apprciated:D

Your motor has an alternator. All the big motors had them by then. Does your manual not show the colors? Must be a brand X manual.

Yes, it does show the colors in the manual but it doesnt make much sense. I'll try to explain it best as I can so here it goes.

It shows to connect the purple and white wire to the battery part of the ignition switch. The problem is that it has a slip like end not a circular end -(not sure the proper term) which doesnt seem compatible to be able to connect to it. It seems it should have a circular hole so it can be screwed in so I dont get how i'm suppose to do that considering there isn't another purple and white wire with a compatible end. There is however a red and white wire that has such end but I doubt that is the answer. The only place that slip end would fit is off the temp. indicating light. Everything else seems to be right so I guess that is my only real question-How do I connect that wire to the described end? Where is that paper!!!!! LOL

So the problem is the lug type on the wire ends? Just get some ring lugs from Radio Shack or Home Depot and a crimper, if you don't have one, and have at it.

Thanks Wilde1J, that would make sense to just change the ends but the problem i'm having is it worked fine before i disconnected it so I cant find the correct sequence using my manual even though its shows a diagram with color sequence for a 1969 85hp with alternator. I guess I can go that route if need be but im weary to change the ends and that i may be going off the wrong diagram from the simple fact it worked fine when hooked up before without changing anything.

Anyone know the correct color scheme for the ignition for my make and model??

Purple with white tracer goes to the choke switch. Send me your e-mail address in a PM if you want a diagram
