'69 Evinrude 85hp lower unit reinstall

I changed the impeller on my 1969 85HP Evinrude and I'm having trouble getting the lower unit back in place. It seems to the water tubes that are causing the problem as I already have the drive shaft lined up and started on. Any tricks or tips for this?

From my experience with my 1970 evinrude, the problem is your motor is probably sitting at too much of an angle. Slide the LU in and have someone trim the motor down until it is almost vertical with the ground. Have a jack ready so you can rest the skeg on it and then you can use the jack to hold it or push the LU up in place while you are messing with the water jackets.
