Re: 69 Evinrude problems

The float is stuck or is sinking or the float valve needle & seat is bad. Same cure for all: Get a carburetor repair kit and clean / repair your carburetor. They have the kits here at iboats. Or get an OEM one from a dealer and it will include a new float.

Just a suggestion: get a hold of a diagram, either buy a manual or go to the library, or search online for a picture and figure out the name of that little hole.

Sounds like you may have a stuck float.
fuel will become gummy over time and as the various components break down it will leave a varnish behind. The float will actually become glued to the bottom of the bowl leaving the float needle open whether the bowl is full or not. Then the fuel pump keeps sending fuel to a full bowl and out it comes.

This motor been sitting a while?

If that's the case you may need to rebuld the carb.

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

I have the Clymer manual for Evinrude/Johnson Outboard Shop Manual: 1.5 - 125 HP years 1956-1972. So if you ahve any questions, then feel free to ask and I will give you the information that you need.

When you say it won't crank, do you mean that it won't start? It cranks over though? Give me more info please.

OK, you say the float needle & seat was gummed up. How about the rest of the carburetor? And did you put new gaskets in it?

How about the main metering jet #15, in the bottom of the float bowl? It is right down there where the worst of the gum collects. It has a tiny hole through it that must be absolutely, perfectly clean. All of the fuel must go through that jet. It takes a special screwdriver to get it out, or make your own. I told how in a recent thread titled Fuel Problem '78 Evinrude, 35hp

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

I would now check electrical.
1) Did you have a manual when you did your carb work?
2) If you are certain of your carb work, now is the time to check electrical.
3) pull boot off sparkplug, put a bold in it, and hold it 1/2" away from non-painted steel, and watch for bright blue spark when pulling to start. If it is a two cylinder (I think it is) then check for bright blue spark at both spark plug boots.
4) If the spark is great (not just good), then spray some prespray of oil and gas into the carb opening and pull to start and see if it sputters and dies or if it won't even sputter. Then repost....I am guessing that your problem is in electrical...

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

I cleaned out the main metering jet. It ran great for a whyle. after it ran a whyle it started cutting out. if you idle down to about half throttle it starts cutting in and out. whyle it is cutting in and out if you give it gas at just the right time it will pick up and run good. when it is cutting out it is just running on one cylinder. you can pull the top wire off the plug and it doesnt change at all, but if you pull the bottom it dies. I have replaced the coil on the top cylinder and replaced all the points and condincers. I didnt have feeler gauges so someone said I could use a new business card to set the points that it was .020. what can I do now? I have trotlines out and really need to check them!

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

one of the points is vibrating off center. the gap stays at .020 but when they touch one side of the point is shifted over. when I set the point they are even then when I run it it vibrates back over. how can I fix that. am I doing something wrong?

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

You can only change point alignment by bending something. It really won't affect running, but will shorten point life.

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

if it doesnt effect it running what could cause it to cut out like that? when it starts cutting out I can set that point again and it will run fine wide open but when I am just trolling it starts cutting out. and in order to get it to quit cutting out I have te reset that one point. I am about to get fustrated with it, so any info that might help will be very much appreciated.

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

If it is a two cylinder, you can buy electronic parts to replace the points and condenser, have heard really good things about it...It is called Magnatune ignition kit.

18-5101, AP# 13347 Magnatune Ignition Kit (for two cylinder outboards) It contains: Two Magnatune Ignition Modules Solid State Electronic replacement for mechanical contact sets and condensers in Johnson/Evinrude outboards with dual point magneto systems. Includes Installation instructions and all necessary hardware. Not for engines with charging systems.

You can find this kit at:

http://www.marinemanifold.com/sierra/sierra147.aspx

It's price is: $56.00 Canadian funds.

Re: 69 Evinrude problems

I don't understand what you mean by resetting the points. To me resetting means gapping them at .020" Is that changing? As I understood your earlier post you said not. If something else is moving, it would seem that only you can see first hand what that is, since it's not normal. Maybe you would be better off just trash-canning that set of points and slap in a new one?
