i recently bought a 69 johnson 115 w/ hydro electric shift and cracked the foot i replaced the foot with a used one from a junk boat dealer .forward works fine but reverse only works when the motor is idled down, if you give it gas you can hear it slipping by a clicking noise, the worst part is none of the shops want to work on it im a pretty good auto mec and if i knew what was wrong im sure i could fix it.greatly appreciate any help from the experts.

Re: 69 johnson 115 new lower unit bad reverse

We bought a new 115 omc in 69 and had lots of problems with the gears shifting. It would jump in and out of gear at low speeds or while sitting at the dock in neutral. Sometimes it wouldn't start at all. You could never tell if it would run or not. All was identified as electrical and one dealer finally bipassed several wires on the block bus and it ran fine. I think the "don't start in gear" circuit was the culprit.

lancei,

I have a 1970 evinrude 115 lower unit on my 1972 125, Forward is fine, Neutral is fine Reverse i hear it shift, i even look and i see the prop spinning in reverse but give it gas and nothing happens. I have to look to see if theres adjustments for the solenoids. I'm not sure why its doing this. Generally im used to the scenerio when reverse doesnt work it just doesnt work period. So this one has me stumped.

The first thing to check is the gear oil. Make sure that you have "Premimum Blend" oil. This light viscosity oil is the only oil you can use. The "HI-Vis" and HPF oils are too thick and will cause shifting problems. If the oil is correct, and you are getting the proper voltage to the green and blue leads, you then have internal problems. Oil pump, shifter, plunger sticking, etc... It's not too hard but then, the first time is the hardest.....

lancei,

I took my boat out again today and the reverse actually works even though im at an idle it still pulls me backwards with a moderate water current, I'm actually not gonna bother with it, it works good enough for me. Who needs reverse anyways! just carry a paddle!!!
