I put the engine back together after a rebuild, but can't seem to get the armature base to rotate. I noticed that there was an indentation in the retaining support ring (0303277) - does this have to be installed any particular way?

If I tightened the armature support brass plate (0303278) too much, or didn't have enough lube on it, would this cause the armature plate to stick?

I just asked this the other day..no to the retaining ring orientation, but the flat side is up..no to the brass plate being too tight..the coils must be aligned exactly with the bosses or the flywheel will rub on them preventing it from turning..check sparkplug wires obstructing movement possibly

The flywheel itself turns, but I can't get the armature base to rotate to advance the timing.

I just looked at your post. Good info. I did a little digging yesterday and ran across a post that said to put the indentation side down (which puts the tapered side up). I think my problem is that I wiped off all the lube when putting it back together so now, it doesn't move.

Appreciate your help.
