My recently acquired boat has a '69 Johnson 115 which has been running nicely for me. But I have an occasional issue I'd like to troubleshoot. The electric shift doesn't always respond as expected.

Sometimes when starting the boat it is not in neutral even though the throttle is in the neutral position. So the boat wants to creep forward at a slow idle. Also, when putting it into reverse it sometimes does not shift into reverse as expected and as the reverse throttle is increased the rpms come up but the boat is still in forward gear.

Finally, when shifting into reverse, sometimes it tries to shift but I can hear that it is not fully engaging into reverse and while the prop is spinning in reverse it sounds like the gears aren't fully engaged with some popping out of gear.

Often everything works as expected.

To get me started with trouble shooting this would you look more at switching on the throttle or with the lower unit/transmission?

Any common troubleshooting steps?

Thanks for any ideas.

Has the lower unit been serviced and filled with the proper fluid?

have you tried running twelve volts directly to the shift wires in the engine to eliminaste the possibikity of a bad control?

If the wrong fluid is in there that is a major boo boo. Could have done damage to seals. Drain and refill with OMC electric shift oil.

If the oil hasn't been changed recently, do it. But there is a good chance the problem is the shift switch in the remote control. Always check the electrical circuitry before digging into the lower unit. Stuff can be tested.
