69 merc fuel prob

i have a 69 merc outboard modle 800 80hp the problem is it wont stay running unless you stack the gas can up on the sides of the boat i have a new fuel pump and carbs does this sound like a reed valve problem or is a shop just tring to make extra money off of me

It does not sound like a reed problem. <br /><br />Time to re-check the fuel pump job - something is fishy there.<br /><br />-W

onther guy i emailed just replied something about a hose for "pulse pressure" what would that be

He's thinkin gof a later ('74) design that had the pump on the cowl and used hoses to bring the pulse to the pump.<br /><br />-W

ok what should i check on the fuel pump and what would bad reeds do anyway

Bad reeds tend to cause hard starting and poor idling.<br /><br />For the fuel pump(s) just check the diaphram, checkvalves, and gaskets. Also make sure there are no vacuum leaks between the pump and the intake cover AND in the fuel system between the pump and the gas tank. Remember those things suck the gas up, and air leak will break the suction.<br /><br />-W
