Re: 69 merc fuel problem

If it only runs while pumping the bulb the fuel pumps may be shot. On my 69, all my float needles work, but if I really squeeze that bulb with force, I can still get some fuel past the needles. I have found that this actually helps get the motor started. There is no seepage /flooding while running though, which is all I care about.

Then you need to visit the carbs - assuming the pumps were done right. NOTE rebuilding the pumps does not change the carbs. therefore - problem in carbs may be pre-existant.

-W

Re: 69 merc fuel problem

I have about 120 on all cylinders of my 69. You may see as little as 90, but the more important aspect is the balance. All the cylinders should be within 5 lbs or so on compression. A dead or low cylinder makes the rest work harder, which wears the engine faster. You may also find that the initial readings are low but a good decarb can bring the numbers up significantly. Clams is the carb adjustment god, he can steer you good in that route. Good luck...

Re: 69 merc fuel problem

I used the tried and true "Runabout Renovation" by Jim Anderson and also spent some time talking to a shop that repairs/rebuilds boats. The book is fine and gets you through, but it was very helpful being able to talk to guys and see in person how they were doing the rebuilds on boat structure. Sounds like a decarb will probably bring the cylinders a little closer in compression.
