Guys, again I have to default back to iboats when my searches are exausted.

I'm trying to verify a rare engine that was installed in certain models of late year 1969 Pontiac GTO "da judge" models only.
They were 455ci HO's that came out of the box with 460hp.
Any info source? I remember seeing spec's in a Motor's repair manuel around that time.

Re: '69 Pontiac GTO

Here is a C & P
The design themes set by the 1970 Firebird would enjoy a long life span; from 1970 to 1976 only minor changes were made. But under the hood-and on top of the hood-there were changes aplenty. A looming auto insurance crisis threatened to kill performance cars in the early years of the decade, but Pontiac forged ahead with a plan to enlarge the Firebird V-8's displacement to 455 cu in. Two 455s were planned for the Formula and Trans Am, and both were rated in gross and net horsepower as the SAE net output formula gradually replaced the unladed gross ratings that GM used previously. The “Cooking” 455 was rated at 325-gross/255 net bhp, while the 455 HO was good for an additional 60 bhp net! Despite the oil shock of 1973, the 455 remained a Trans Am staple until 1976, by which time; unfortunately, the numbers lost their impact as net output sank to just 200 bhp.

There were some old nascar blocks that were DETUNED in that time frame that certainly would have that HP ,most you had to fix up to get around 500 hp,I think most came with about 300 hp I think to find a stock 455 that year with that hp you should be looking at Olds or Buick 455's since they had that kind of ponies out of the box Can you post the blocknumbers for more help
Pontiac's # under right head at front
Buick's# under #5+#7
Olds #'s back right side head above bell houseing

Re: '69 Pontiac GTO

Thanks dolluper for taking all the time.
I'll continue the search on the Pontiac motor.
I had a '68 GTO with a 400ci, hood tach, my cousin had a '69 "Judge" with the 455/460hp. It came with a Thm400/Hearst dual gate, and posi.

When I-75 first opened we could drive from Tampa to the Ocala exit in 1 hour, it was 100 miles. Jefferson Airplane's "Bark" album in the 8 track.

Hey Skinny not a problem ,I did check my old MOTOR's books abd they don't list any.Buddy of mine was right into GTO's back then and he says they were around but they were special orders and had nascar blocks ,he is searching his old records ,if anyone has that info it would be him,I'LL let you know what he comes up with if you can't get it from GM,he thinks those ones were produced somewhere else and not at the Oshawa plant

Re: '69 Pontiac GTO

I've been looking around some and this is what I found. Looks like the 455 didn't come out until 1970 according to all the info I found.

GTO Engine Spec Sheet

(1969) Pontiac advertised midway through 1969 that they were coming out with a Ram Air V 400 with tunnel port heads. The prototypes built were called Mark V. They produced an estimated 500 HP and were not made for the street, thus they never made it to production. For more information on this subject visit this page of The Ultimate GTO Picture Site.
