6hp 4 stroke Mercury or Nissan??

Hi,<br /><br />I've decided upon a 6hp 4 stroke for my new inflateable. I can buy the Nissan for $270 less than the Mercury. I've heard both may be made by the same company? And I've read about one guy who couldn't find a part for his Nissan whereas Mercury parts were readily available. Is the Merc "packaged" better? Any more bells/whistles added? Just looking for some pros and cons before I place my order tomorrow.......

Thanks Middleground,<br /><br />West Marine and Boat US recently merged. One used to sell Nissan, the other Mercs. Went to look at a Nissan at lunch but both stores now carry the Merc. line. Got to lift up and carry the Merc, light enough for my bad back. Sure looks nice too! One motor or the other will be at my house next week.

Tohatsu makes lots of motors for Nissan and Merc, I bet they make that one too.<br /><br />Does it look like this?<br />Compare the engine spec, <br /> $1129, I bet they are the same.<br /><br />

I just bought a Nissan 18 HP, and just about all of the 25 HP and lower 4-stroke Mercury motors are made by Nissan for them.<br /><br />This is from the factory, you can e-mail them through their website.<br /><br />Cabelas has a lot of them on sale in their "bargain cave" too.

All Nissan badged engines are made by Tohatsu.<br /><br />Tohatsu is also believed by many to make the small engines for other brand names as well.
