I was also wondering what type of spark plug and gap is best for this motor. Thank so much

5524 is the model number, and it is a 1962 5.5 Evinrude.

Fuel mix is 24:1

Plugs are Champion J4C gapped at .030".

Set magneto points at .020"

Somebody put a 6HP cowling on it.

The throttle handle or grip sticker says on it that it is a 6hp and to put a 50:1 mix in it. I just got it a little while ago and it never quite ran right. Perhaps the handle was replaced? I guess i should try the 24:1 mix.

I just checked my plugs and the lower ones gap was shut. I guess this is from running 50:1 when I should be running 24:1. If I replace the plugs and make a fresh mix is there anything else I should do to the motor or will it work itself out. Thanks for the info guys - great site

Don't run your motor at 24:1 it is built to run rich on the 50:1. Try using seafoam to decarb the engine every once in a while, this will keep everything running nice and clean from your carb to your spark plugs and everything in between. The decarb will cause ALOT of smoke.

Now I'm real confused - the above post says the motor should use a 24:1 mix?

It sounds as though its a "bitsa". As JB says 5524 is a 1962 5?5 hp and that should be run on 24:1

See Chinewalker's post on fuel mixtures on the engine FAQ board.

However if the quoted model number is from the transom bracket it could be that it is not the original bracket. In which case the 6Hp cowling and the sticker on the tiller could be correct!

Try looking for a model number on a freeze plug to see if it is really a 5524.

Maybe some photos will enable someone to say which it is.

BTW see http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf for model numbers and http://www.boatsetup.com/Spark Plug Chart 2007 BRP.pdf for plug types

That cowling looks like one from a 1962.

Clean up and rest the points to the figure JB gave. make sure they are spotlessly clean.

Re-gap the plugs, check the sparks. Renew the plugs if in doubt.

Return for further help if still not running right .

(No connection between plug gap and fuel mix just that the bearings etc in yours are not suitable for 50:1. The oil mix can affect the carb settings though. You might have needed to make them a little leaner to run on a 50:1 mix)

Yes, on that model, it would be best to run the 24/1 mixture. You can use either Champion J4C or J6C plugs, gapped at .030. The J6C might provide a somewhat improved performance.

You stated in your 3rd post: "I just checked my plugs and the lower ones gap was shut."

The oil mixture has nothing to do with that happening. That is caused by either a loose connecting rod/piston scenario which allows the piston to hit the spark plug... OR... something is in that cylinder banging into the piston. I either case, that's something you want to investigate. You can check the piston play as follows.

(Piston Play Check)
(J. Reeves)

This procedure will tell you if there is any wear or play in the Wrist Pin, Wrist Pin Bearing, or Connecting Rod to Crankshaft area.

Remove the spark plugs. Insert a screwdriver, dowel, punch, or some object of your choice through the s/plug hole and into the cylinder/piston area. Hold the tool lightly against the top of the piston. Turn the flywheel by hand, bringing the piston up to top dead center, then continue turning the flywheel to pull the piston down about a inch..... all the while holding the tool lightly against the piston top.

Now, at the point whereas the piston has been dropped down about a inch, grab the flywheel and hold it firmly. Now, push that tool solidly and firmly against the piston top.

If the piston moves without moving the flywheel, there is a problem (wear, play, clearance, etc) somewhere with the items mention in the first sentence. Be sure to check all of the pistons/cylinders.

Re: 6hp evinrude fisherman - id year ? spark plugs question

Thanks Joe- I tried that test and passed with flying colors. Then I realized what the problem was- The dude I bought the motor the from had regular plugs in it - they were just a little deeper and thats why they were being hit. Well I have the right plugs - the right gap- the right mix- and now I know the year or the Motor- Thanks so much guys- Now Im heading out to the lake to see how she works!
