I recently got a 60s 6HP evinrude from my father. He maintained it pretty well when he used it years ago, but then let it sit for a few years. When I got it from him it was very hard to pull on the starter. I thought the pistons might be rusted, i put some rust breaker solution in the chambers, let it sit for a few days , no change. So I thought it could be either the gears or the motor and separated them. I also noted it was hard to shift into forward before separating. When the motor is separated, no problem turning it over, so problem is in gears. I can turn the prop by hand but it is stiff. I opened the fill screw, very little oil came out! The motor was probably run a little (4-5 hrs total) a few years back and I remember it shifted a little hard, so I assume oil was low then too.

OK, thats the problem. I'm ready to disassemble the gearcase if I have to, but am asking is it necessary and what should I do before I get started. Should I fill the gearcase first and try that? But then where did all the lube go? I know I should change the water pump. Is there a gear rebuild kit that comes with all the seals bearings and water pump? Who should I buy it from? I mean it a 60s motor, I don't want to start spending 100s if my outlook is poor. it always ran great 10 years ago when it was used alot.

What would you do? Also any reassembly tips.

Thanks
