I have a 1971 6hp evinrude- it was running great but died out while putting through a no wake zone- it will start up fine and run for 30 seconds if I spray mix directly into the carb but if i hook it up to the tank it will not start at all- it just makes a gargle sound when I pull the starter - If i remove the fuel line to the tank and prime the bulb is sends plenty of gas to the carb- When i pump the bulb with everything hooked up gas leaks out of the bottom of the carb- thanks

First, make sure that there is no water in that fuel tank, and that you do indeed have the proper fuel/oil mixture in it.

If the fuel setup is okay, I'd suggest that you dismantle the carburetor as it sounds like something may have come loose and be jamming the high speed jet, float needle valve, something of that nature.

Pull the 7/16 plug in the bottom of the carb bowel and see if anything comes out. If nothing comes out pump primer bulb, if still nothing, the needle and seat are stuck closed. Remove carb and overhaul.

Possible trash picked up in the high speed orifice(jet). Just behind the bowl drain. try clearing with a small wire and blow everything out with compressed air.

Well I took the carb apart and cleaned it out- I boiled everything in water and lemon juice- It passed the blow test- no air flow right side up- nice air flow upside down- unfortunately its 10pm and my condo neighbors most likely would not enjoy a two stroke firing up - so ill see how if that fixed my problem in the morning. Thanks for the help

After cleaning out this carb and taking all of the above steps I still can not get this thing to start while hooked up to the gas tank? Fuel pumps doing its job, the carb is cleaned and functioning properly (i think) and still nothing

The fuel should not flow when the carburetor is upside down.

The fact that the engine will run when you spray premix into the carburetor throat BUT will not run otherwise proves that the problem is with the carburetor.

This is assuming that the premix you're using is the same premix that is in the fuel tank connected to the engine. I state this just in case water exists in the fuel tank.

The brass high speed jet which is located in the center bottomportion of the float chamber has a quite small inner diameter hole. Fuel must flow thru this jet before it can gain access to any other fuel passageway. Make absolutely sure that this jet is clean as it sounds like something is clogging that passageway.

The choke butterfly is functioning I assume?

Your original post stated that fuel leaks from the bottom of the carb when primer bulb is squeezed, something isn't right could you elaborate on that, does fuel leak from the base gasket, could the fuel hose a split in it near the carb, where exactly is this fuel leaking from, external leaks aren't good, if it leaks fuel it can also pull air in.

Just had this problem yesterday. Your float bowl adjustment is not correct. If you prime the bulb and fuel comes out of the offices on the carb you need to reset the height. Also when your carb is right side up with the bowl removed you should be able to blow through your fuel inlet line. When upside down it should not allow this air to pass into the bowl. I had an extra carb laying around so I just took out the pin and changed the whole float assembly. But I can almost guarantee that is your problem.

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.
