I have a 6 Hp Evinrude 1990 outboard and have done several carb rebuilds, replaced ignition coil repl;aced output coils and plug wires. The motor easily starts when I have the choke closed, but slows down and stops when I open the choke. Is it possible that I either have a carb problem or fuel pump problem. How can I check where the problem is??? I'd sure like to get this motor out on the lake.. Thanks for any possible help!!

That's too new a motor for me, but try giving the slow speed needle a tweak toward rich. If that doesn't help, remove and clean the high speed jet orfice plug.

A few of the 6/8hp carbs around that era call for a replacement of the top plastic piece. It can warp and cause the symptoms you describe. Not sure if the '90 fits into that category.

The motor won't run without choke, is it possible that the fuel pump is at fault??? Thanks marvxyz2

No, if you're able to sustain running w/ the choke the fuel pump is working.
(i.e. it's getting fuel).

Your problem is it's too lean at idle. Most likely a clogged idle jet or an air leak someplace.

I think that I"m going to try teflon tape on slow idle screw and packing scerew to see if I possibly got a air leak there, before tearing down the carb again marvxyz2

easier way to check would be to spray water on the packing nut while its is running. if it is drawing air, you will hear the difference immediately.
Careful with Teflon tape. If it strings out it can clog the tiny fuel openings.

One other thing you can do is pull the fuel line off the carb and pull the starter,Fuel should flow out of it,to check your fuel pump.

Re: 6Hp Evinrude

I Think after many tries to determine the problem with this 6 Hp. I noticed a 1/8 inch hole in my carb throat which leads to a bolt hole . The hole doesn't appear to be a symetrical circle. I think I have a hole in the casting of the carb throat. at the butterfly. Can some one please post a couple of pics of the carb throat one with the butterfly open and one closed so that I can confirm that this is the problem?? Thanks so very much Marvxyz2

I don't have a digital camera so I can't post a pic of the possible defect sorry Marvxyz2

Another thing don't use teflon tape on carb parts which come into contact with gasolene. The gas disolved my teflon tape...
