Hi,

1966 6hp Fisherman.

I am replacing my oil seal that sits under the water pump. My question is which way should I put it on - from the bottom by removing the pinion gear or from the top where the shaft goes into the powerhead?

I know the lip on the seal is important, but where is the pressure greater - in the gearbox or under the water pump. Should the lip be pointing down into the gearbox or up the shaft and into the water pump?

I have attached a diagram. It is no. 14, oil seal I am referring to.

Also, the seloc pin (no. 8 on the diagram). What does this do?

Many thanks,

James

Re: 6hp Fisherman LU oil seal

The seal presses into the aluminum plate that the water pump plate sits on. The plate can be removed from the gearcase for working on it. I know you don't have the special tool to take the seal out of the plate, so it's whatever you can find in your toolbox to drive it out. Be careful not to bend the plate.

The seal lip points down.

The pin supports and drives all those carbon seal parts that are shown above it. They remain up in the housing when you drop the lower unit.

Re: 6hp Fisherman LU oil seal

Thanks,

Rebuilt the lower unit with the lip pointing down. Tested and oil is nice and clean so seems like the lower unit has sealed ok.

Still can't work out what the seloc pin does, but put it back in and all ok.

Thanks,
