I got my engine running well, so thought I had better check the condition of the gear oil.

Opened the two screws and water poured out!

Took the Gear case off the motor and took apart and rebuilt making sure all was sealed nicely.

However, I am not confident about the top of the Gear case where the drive shaft comes down under the water pump. I think I am missing something.....

I have left the gearcase upside down and sure enough oil is beginning to find its way out.

In the pic attached this is all I have before I fit the cover gasket and then the impellar and pump body.

Am i missing a seal?

Thanks,

James

go here and uncheck the check mark (you dont have to enter an email) then plug in all of your motors info and then you can see a blow out diagram of your motor, you might could tell if somethings missing by their pictures. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure I understand....Did you replace the seal under the water pump housing?? There is most definitelly supposed to be one there. Possibly even 2 seals sandwiched together in opposite dirrections (I'm not sure on this motor). That's a common spot where the l.u. leaks. When you rebuilt it, you should have gotten a good look at the drive shaft in that area. They often have a groove in that are of the driveshaft that will cause your new seal to leak if you seat the seal on the same spot on the shaft. Some folks like to install the seal not all the way down in the seat so it won't run on the groove in the shaft but on nice flat metal on the shaft. Some of the new seals are engineered so that when fully seated, they don't run in the old groove. If you didn't replace the seal under the water pump, it's definitely your problem. Did you wind up with an extra seal in your seal kit??
good luck,
JBJ

I went back and had a look. There is a housing. I spent an hour trying to gentle move it but would not budge. It broke in the end leaving part of it around the shaft.

Does anyone know how best to finish off the job and get it out of the top of the lower unit? It is compeltly stuck! 42 years I guess it has been in there... I don't want to break the shaft and the gearcasing.

I guess once off I can purchase a new housing and a ger seal kit.

Thanks,

James

You can pull the driveshaft out from the bottom - you have to take the gearcase apart. Then you'll just have to try prying the old housing out. That housing has a built in bushing on the bottom and an "oil retainer" (seal) goes on the top which seals the l/u from water. A new housing will cost you around $100 and it includes the seal that the drive shaft goes through. Good luck!

That makes sense. I guess with the drive shaft removed I can trying pushing the housing out from underneath (via the gears).

$100 for a Kit sounds a lot of money! Thats 50 pounds here in England and I think parts over there tend to be much cheaper.

Out of interest, as a comaprison, one new coil ?20.

As another option I guess I could try and get an old gearcase, where the seals have not gone an subsitute mine. I am a little upset as I have spent time and money on the engine and she was running so well under test.

Thanks,
James

Well, it just happens that I took that housing off a '78 Evinrude l/u that had been replaced by another used one. Would have been a good idea except for the fact that the bushing that the drive shaft turns in was worn and I did not realize it at the time. If you are going to try the used route you need to be concerned about the condition of that bushing that is built into that housing. Then again your luck may be better than mine.
