6hp johnson backfiring

m#6R78B s#C8019151 just replaced water pump guts and plugs also cleaned out carb now pull with choke on 3times choke off 1 pull backfires

Did you inadvertantly switch the plug wires? Very common mistake. Been there, done that.

no plug wires are onthe right way the carb had water in it so I took the carb off and cleaned it

Yep, water doesn't burn. Makes for potential lean condition which will also make them backfire.<br /><br />Glad you found it.

so I guess now that carb is clean it will probably backfire until the water leaves the compression chamber

cotester If you did not clean the lines to the fuel pump and carb,you may have re-installed water into the carb.<br /> Also pull the plugs and crank the engine several times to get the water out of the engine.<br />Good Luck,DHP

I took carb apart again cleaned lines as well removed plugs pulled several times still remains to do the samething backfiring

cotester Sounds like the fuel system is ok.<br /><br />Keep in mind you need spark,fuel,and compresion. You also need spark at the right time.Pull the flywheel and make sure the key is not sheared.If it is,replace it AND torque the nut to spec.<br />DHP
