6hp Motor Maintenance

My grandfather passed away recently and in his garage was a 6hp evinrude motor that I have inherited (not exact of year but roughly a mid-80's). My uncle had sold it to my grandfather about 15 years ago and the motor was never used by my grandfather. It sat on a stand in his garage since he had it. My uncle swears it ran like a champ when he sold it to my grandfather.

My question is, after sitting for 15 years what is it I should do to it prior to even trying to start it. It appears to be in like new shape, not even a scratch on the shaft or cowling. But should I be concerned with gaskets or anything of the like due to sitting dorment for so long?

Re: 6hp Motor Maintenance

those are great motors.. My F-I-L has a 70's version, but I'm the only one who's used it for the last few years. I changed the impeller on it this spring. It should be done on yours and is not hard to do. The 6 hp is a funny one, in that once you unbolt the lower unit and disconnect the shift linkage, you have to turn the drive shaft (by turning the flywheel) to get the lower unit off. There is a little cross pin in the top of the driveshaft that holds some kind of cup thingy up and keeps the lower crank bearing sealed. There is only a slot for this pin to pass through when the cross pin is perpendicular to the propeller shaft (when looking from the top down... of course you don't know where that is until it's off)

It's easier to do than it sounds.

good luck!
