I own a 6hp Johnson. I use it on my 10ft Dehaviland. This hull is a bit small, but i do own a 14ft sailing boat. So instead of buying a new hull, could I Put my Johnson on the Sailing Boat. Any Ideas? Would it be Safe?

Thank you for your help

sounds pretty heavy... I use to have 20' oday sailboat weighing about 1700 lbs with a little cabin and my 5 hp motor would push it hull speed just fine.

6hp on a 14' daysailor sounds pretty heavy. You might want to consider looking around for a used 3hp motor.. motors in that size range typically have the built-in 1/3 gal gas tank which will get you to and from the dock without the additional weight and space consumption of a remote tank.

Nothing against iboats; but, www.trailersailor.com is a great site specializing in small and trailerable sailboats... some good input can be gathered from there.

Have fun... I sure do miss sailing.

--Hise

The thing is I will only use my motor when there is no mast or sails. I will be using a sailing boat hull as a motor boat. Is this allright.

Most 14' sailboats I know of would be stern heavy w/ a 6 hp on the back & would effect sailing performance.
If the motor will be attached to a bracket, be sure it is strong enough to handle it.
It's OK to use a sailboat w/out sails & mast. Depending on hull shape you may find the boat rolls a bit more than when sailing. The mast & sails dampen the movement. In the old days motor boats often used a small riding sail to help with the motion of the boat.
You might find leaving the rudder on makes for easier steering.
