1972 6hp johnson 2 cylinder<br />hi folks, im back. this motor has been trouble since day one. i have over 300 dollars in parts alone into this thing..not counting my time and labor<br /><br />i thought motor had "knocking sound" cause i would hear a "tinging" when it was running. previous owner never changed impellar and ran it anyways and it didnt cool, so he gave to me for a fish finder..traded.he wasnt very mechanically inclined<br /><br />with cylinder head removed, and piston at full top dead center, i can spin the piston clockwise and counter clockwise about 1/16 of an inch each way. should it move like this at all... both pistons do this<br />i fear that previous owner overheated it and cooked the wrist pins. how far off am i about this<br /><br />any ideas.<br /><br />mikey

Hi Mike,<br /> What you're describing isn't a piston issue, rather a rod issue. Sounds like you've got it torn down now and have figured that out yourself. If the pistons aren't too badly scorched, re-use them. Install some new rings, hone the bores enough to get rid of any ridges, etc. and leave a nice cross-hatch pattern. If the rods got cooked when the bearings went, then you may be in need of them, too. If just the sleeves for the bearings got cooked, then you may be able to get away with just replacing the sleeves and bearings. Hopefully the crankshaft wasn't damaged in the process. I think at this point I'd be looking for a parts powerhead on eBay or something...<br />- Scott
