Guys, I am new to this forum. I am thinking of buying a 6hp Tohatsu for my small fishing boat. I need input, is the little 6hp as rough as some say it is or does it run reletively smooth. Also, is the quality somewhat on par with Honda or Yahama? Thanks for help guys...

Honda and Yamaha are almost as good and it runs like all single cylinder engines....Rough.

Re: 6hp tohatsu quality

I have a fleet customer who has a lot of these. They get used on sailboats by complete novices, and take a real beating, bordering on abuse. In my experience, they are almost indestructible. None of them have needed anything aside from normal maintenance.

As Elvin mentioned, the 4/5/6 is a 1-cylinder, and is definitely a bit rough, especially at slow RPMs. This is the case with all 1-cylinder motors (including the brands youmentioned). If you really need something smoother, going with the 2-cylinder 8/9.8 is a huge step in that direction, but the smoothness comes at a significant price and weight penalty.
