I'm buying a 150-200 small block etec and I'm trying to decide if I want to use my existing 7 3/8" pump with a V6 impeller or upgrade to a 7 5/8". I was told by Outboard Jets the smaller pump would be faster and the bigger pump better for heavy loads. I'd prefer to save money by using my old jet unit but if it's going to seriously hinder performance I might as well get out my wallet. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about jet pumps and probably nobody else does either. But don't give up, maybe somebody will chime in.

The larger unit does help to get a heavier load on plane, I haven't run the larger unit ( at least that I know of) to know how much of a difference there is though.

What size and make of boat are you putting it on? This can be a deciding factor.

Actually I have run them with the larger unit, but I haven't run one with the over sized intake. I just haven't run the smaller unit and the larger unit on the same boat to know how different it is..

The motor is going on a 1998 17'8" Wooldridge Alaskan (53" bottom). Coast guard rated for 115hp max but I was told that was more of a minimum. I think it would be very happy with 150hp and the 200hp etec is the same motor so why not.

I'm surprised how little information is available online. Anything 140hp+ seems to default to 7 5/8" so I'm going to assume it's a better choice. It would just be nice to know how much better. I hate to drop an extra $2500 if I don't have to.
