I will try to explain the problem if I leave out something please just ask the question and I will try to answer

1995 2855 w/ 7.4 Bravo II carb

When starting the motor it wants to kick into gear
If I push the button on the throttle to disengage the trans. so I can advance the throttle when the engine catches it wants to jump into gear.
This makes it very hard to start when it?s cold and its just not suppose to do that.
Not sure if it is something in the shifter or on the engine

The shifter is about 2 yrs old
About 6 months ago they had the engine out I watched them adjust the linkage using the manual and some sort of special tool.

Not sure if anyone can help but maybe this has happened to someone else

Please feel free to ask any questions because I am sure that I have left out something that could be important in determining the problem

To add I got the engine started yesterday after the temp. of the engine got to 145degrees I was able to rev the engine up and the problem went away

Re: 7.4 bravo II starting problem

It's possible that it's still out of adjustment. Maybe the cable from the engine to the drive is adjusted properly, but the cable from the engine to the control may be missadjusted.
I would disconnect the engine/helm cable at the engine and put the drive in neutral manually (with the engine at idle). Then see how the neutral from the helm matches up to the linkage.
You can download a copy of the OEM service manual at the link below. You need #11.

Look at section 2A starting on page 34

It works for me, it's just over 11 MB in size, give it some time.

Might click here and see if you just download that particular section.

Re: 7.4 bravo II starting problem

Well

Yes and no

I followed your instructions and have pretty much determined with you help that it is the linkage to the Trans. ( I guess that is what you call it) ( the lower cable) After I made an adjustment to the cable the problem got better. But I like to make sure that I have done everything correct ( not confident ) so I hired our local
repair shop to come in and take a look at my work. ( in aviation we have one person do the work and someone else check it out) I explained what you had advised and he said that it sounded like that your advise had fixed the problem.
He will be looking at my work Tues. or Wed.
I will let you know the outcome.
I owe you one.
What size jacket do you wear?? I will send you one with our company logo

Thanks for the offer Harry, but a jacket is not necessary.
Hope your adjustments work out for you.
