7.5 Gamefisher Question

Hi guys. I had someone drop off a 1983 7.5 Sears gamefisher. Mod# 217-585751 Ser # 38-122003. I've cleaned the carbs and verified its getting fuel. I did a compression check and its around 90psi. So, the problem I'm having is not starting. Its not even trying to fire. With the plug out, I noticed the spark looks weak. I'm picking up a spark tester tomorrow, but if that is the problem, I need to know what I'm looking for. Its a Tecumseh engine and I wonder if perhaps the stator is going or just needs to be cleaned with some sandpaper. In my past experience I found the electrical in these little motors either worked or they didn't. I've never run across one with a weak or degraded spark. Any thoughts or advice?

Re: 7.5 Gamefisher Question

Thanks for the info mrcrabs. I have found out in the past that the impellor is the same as a small merc and is half the cost as ordering it from Sears. I've also gotten carb kits from lawnmower shops that Sears say are NLA. Perhaps I'll try that tomorrow.

I only know of the 9.8 merc impeller that is used in the eska, never knew there was a evinrude that would work, anyway you could get us some model info on that impeller? the merc is 7/16+.01ID, about 12$ I have seen another similar impeller for eska (not the older tall one) listed but didn't relize it had no keyway.

Re: 7.5 Gamefisher Question

Now that I think about it, your right it was an impellor from a merc. I don't think they come without the keyway anymore. The one I was referring to came out of a '76 model. Anyway, I put a spark tester on the plug and after pulling a few times I got a bright spark and the sucker fired. it seemed to happen intermittantly though. I pulled the flywheel and the points looked brand new. I checked the gap and cleaned tham and I noticed a green wire that comes into contact with a screw when you turn the throttle all the way back. I'm assuming that this is the kill wire?? If it is, its shorted to ground all the time. am I assuming right or does this wire serve another function?(pic inclosed) If that isn't right, I'm thinking something is grounding the motor out thus the no start problem. I hope I'm on the right track.
