My motor starts fine, I put it in the water and shift it to engage the propeller. Wouldn't ya know the boat doesn't even move. I pull it out and it turns out the propeller doesn't spin. So I removed the lower gear casing. Gear looks striped, but when I pull the starter the propeller turns. this is where I am confused. so I decided to remove the whole lower unit to see if there is a problem with the drive shaft. Drive shaft looks good but if I manually turn the drive shaft the propeller doesn't turn. Sound simple replace the propeller gear, but I am concerned that whatever the drive shaft hooks up to (on the motor end) may not be working. an easy way to check this would be to remove the propeller gear and see if the gear pinion spins when I start up the motor. Well I removed the lower unit and can't get it back on so I can't check to see if this is the case. How do I reattach the lower unit? Also what do I need to do as far as maintenance lube/ oil for the lower unit?

Yes, and I'm not having fun. Still trying to figure out how to get the prop shaft out. To get the lower unit back on this sucker, you want to stand it on it's head, and plug the water tube in to the power head first. Then when you drop the lower unit in, you'll need a loop of bailing wire around the water tube, so you can move it around to hit the hole in the lower unit. I just bent a simple U-shape in the wire, and ran it into the water tube thru the exhaust port, and around the tube. Then when the tube started into it's hole in the lower, I pulled the wire straight, and it came out.

is there any lube or grease I need to be applying to the moving parts before I reconnect? I really don't want to be doing this more than once

Re: 7.5 hp gamefisher lower unit reattachment/problems

Hi i just recently bought the same motor and i was having oil leak out of the small holes by the gearcase (i did store it laying flat the previous night...i dont know if that caused it maybe). does this mean i need to replace a seal somewhere. and if so how would i go about doing that?
thank you
