7.5 hp Mercury, second snag to project!!!

Well....My first task was to take off the prop. Wrestled with it and a modified gear puller for autos...finally got it off...hub it toast. Since I was messing with a heat gun anyway....I decide to try and free the "Flush" screw. I got it off, but, there seems to be sand or corrosion filling the port!! I put a screw driver in there and it kinda crumbled as I turned the driver, but the port makes a hard 90 up the the block. I'm hoping the cooling system is fine (not entirely filled) Does it make sense that maybe only the "Flush" is clogged up?? The only way to tell is to drop the lower unit, right?? Anybody have similar experience??

Could be just in the area of the flush but you will know nothing untill the lower is removed.
