7.5 sears gamefisher HELP

So i have an 89 sears gamefisher 7.5hp and it cranks on first pull and runs like a sewing machine but the first time out it was kinda hesitant and a little skippy. After about 5 mins of use it shut off and smoked. The man i bought it from said he was told that there really wasn't supposed to be any mist from the outlets. I happen to already own a 70s model Ted Williams 7.5 that is also air cooled and doesn't spray while in neutral but in forward motion produces two nice triangle shaped mists. The gamefisher i mentioned seems to be needing a new impeller but the gentleman i bought it from said it was replaced at the shop along with new reads and gaskets. So does anyone have any ideas what could be my issue?

So i got the impeller out and there is damage. How tight is it supposed to fit into the pump assembly?

What's the model number? The impeller is supposed to have to be kind of screwed clockwise into the pump cavity so when it's in there, the vanes are bent. Don't leave any chunks of old impeller vane in there, either. Also, clean the drives haft thoroughly before you go on with the impeller, you need it to be free to move vertically when it's running, it'll get hot. Don't forget to get a new drive pin for it. You can also cut a float hinge pin for that if you have a spare.

So after you give me that link i looked up the parts i need. The numbers are different from the ones in the manual. The parts look the same though. All i need is impeller and impeller pin. Should i be ok?

I hope you didn't order from Sears - they skin you on shipping and they get all their Tecumseh parts from

VinParts

I have seen a lot of these impeller housings that were pitted inside, but failing that, the pin and impeller should get you some mist out the back of the leg.

Re: 7.5 sears gamefisher HELP

I have one of these as well, the air cooled model that looks like a lawn mower engine from the top. I got it for free from a neighbor. It had been sitting in his shed for at least five years. The motor was wrapped in plastic and the gas tank is clean-he said he ran it dry before storing it. It turns freely and seems to have good compression but I haven't tried to start it yet. I'm new to boats and outboards in general so I think I'm going to have a shop check it out. Are parts generally available for these things? What are the most frequent problems (besides the impellers...lol). I don't want to hijack this thread, so feel free to DM me-I just didn't want to start another 7.5HP gamefisher thread since this one is already going.

You really should start another thread, Diesel, that way, the motors and advice don't get crossed up. The most likely source of problems after water pump impeller will be the carburetor. When you start your thread, include a model number.
