I have a 7.5 gamefisher and Im replacing the impeller but noticed there is a notch in the shaft that a key would normally fit in. But there wasn't one. My buddy ordered a impeller pin which is a short straight pin which would usually go through the shaft but there is no hole in shaft for pin to go through. Can anyone tell me what my problem is?

I just took my 7.5 Ted Williams apart and there was no key or pin in the slot. Not having any other option and not wanting to be down forever I made one to fit by cutting down a needle bearing from any old clutch pilot bearing that was in my tool box.
I'm sure the original one was softer metal but its all I had and it worked.

I'm not 100% sure there was one even in there before, I couldn't find any bits of an old one and this thing was still pumping water. Not knowing the history on this thing and knowing it had been run dry on a saw horse I expected to find a completely fried impeller but it was still somewhat serviceable, not good but still intact in other words. It was more dry rotted than anything.

Your other big fear is the lower crank seal - if it gets hot and shrinks, you lose bottom end pressure and it either can't suck air thru the carb, or doesn't do it well making it hard to start when warmed up.
