So the impeller was in pieces and i couldn't find but 3 of the impeller blades stuck in the water pump and housing. Yes i have the manual. The manual doesn't show all and i am curious if the finned piece on the port side, attached to the iron block between the cylinders and engine block which has a brass tube connecting it to the top cylinder is part of the cooling system and if i need to remove it to locate the missing impeller pieces. That is my best run on sentence to date...
If it is part of the cooling system, is it a thermostat or something on that order. Workin with little four stroke engines all my life has made me a little slow. Jerome

Hi Jerome,
You might have to start methodically working your way through the system. Start at the intake end and work up. They typically get hung up on transition areas - copper tubing to casting, bend in the casting, casting to outlet, etc. First place I'd look is where the up-tube connects to the bottom of the block...
New impellers from Grubb's (www.oldmercs.com) and will run you $24.95.
- Scott

Thanks Scott.
What would be the best way to go about it.
I've ordered a new impeller and lower unit seal kit already and would like to avoid stripping this motor to ball bearings and widgets if possible, but i realize it may come to that. Any way to force water into the right place and check that way if the passages are blocked ? I know, i'm grasping at straws. my incomplete project list has reached it's max and i am now forced to complete them. So here i go...
Jerome
So is that thing with the fins a thermostat ?

Hi Jerome,
I would start by maybe hooking a vacuum up to the water uptake tube, maybe with a screen over the nozzle so you can see if anything gets drawn back down. The bottom line is that those blades have got to be there somewhere, unless someone may have previously had it apart...
There is no t-stat on those motors. Those fins are merely added cooling capability - kinda like the ones on your lawnmower engine. If I'm not mistaken, you might be able to remove the cylinder water jacket covers without to much trouble - assuming your motor isn't a salty.
Might eventually have to pull the powerhead - not a big deal and nothing's going to pop out at you. Try to salave any gaskets as best you can to use as templates for new ones. Good luck!
- Scott

Hi Scott, okay so i guess i need to pull the lower unit and maybe the leg off the powerhead. or maybe it's pull the powerhead off the housing, semantics i suppose. the manual says to remove the two nuts (one of which is a special triangular design)to separate the lower unit from the housing and they are located at the same height but one is in front and one is in the back. Not on my motor.i have two hex nuts one where the lower unit joins the exhaust housing and the other hex nut two thirds of the way up near the pivot. does this sound familiar ? This stuff is alot more fun with a model specific manual to work with.
Thanks again, Jerome
